Rwanda Joins the Global Lithium Race with Southern Province Discovery

**Kigali, Rwanda – July 14, 2025** Rwanda has officially entered the spotlight of the global clean energy transition following the discovery of significant lithium deposits in its **Southern Province**, a region already known for its rich mineral landscape. The breakthrough was announced by UK-based mining firm **Aterian Plc**, whose early exploration efforts at the **HCK Project** yielded commercially promising results. Initial drilling revealed a high-grade lithium intercept of **6.9 meters at 2.11% Li₂O**, with a particularly rich section measuring **3.45 meters at 3.20% Li₂O**—making it viable for use in electric vehicle batteries and other green technologies. The HCK license area spans **2,750 hectares** and includes 19 pegmatite zones rich in lithium, tantalum, and cesium. The project is a joint venture between Aterian Plc and global mining heavyweight **Rio Tinto**, which holds a **51% stake**, expected to increase to **75%** after committing a **$7.5 million investment** over three years. Analysts say this could be a turning point for Rwanda’s mining sector, which currently contributes around **3% to the nation’s GDP** and employs over **72,000 workers**. Government officials are optimistic, with plans underway to fast-track environmental assessments and regulatory frameworks to support sustainable extraction. The move aligns with Rwanda’s broader ambitions to position itself as a strategic player in supplying critical minerals for renewable energy and digital technology. “This is a remarkable opportunity for Rwanda,” said a Ministry of Mines spokesperson. “We are focused on responsible development that benefits our communities and meets global sustainability standards.” If further studies confirm commercial viability, Rwanda could become a key supplier of lithium—dubbed **“white gold”**—just as demand for electric mobility and energy storage solutions surges worldwide.
