EU and China Signal Potential Compromise Over Electric Vehicle Tariffs

Negotiators from the European Union and China are reportedly intensifying discussions to find an alternative to the recently imposed tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles. The European Commission recently implemented duties of up to 35.3% on top of existing rates, citing concerns over unfair state subsidies that could undercut European manufacturers. Beijing has consistently denied these allegations, describing the measures as protectionist and initiating its own investigations into European imports such as dairy and pork. However, both sides have expressed a willingness to explore 'price undertakings'—a mechanism where exporters agree to a minimum sales price to offset subsidy concerns. While some EU member states, led by Germany, have urged for a diplomatic solution to avoid a broader trade war, others argue that firm measures are necessary to protect the internal market's industrial future. Analysts suggest that while a definitive agreement remains elusive, the continuation of high-level talks indicates a mutual desire to stabilize trade relations.
