U.S. Shifts Policy on Long-Range Missile Strikes Inside Russian Territory

The Biden administration has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles for strikes deep inside Russia, marking a significant shift in Washington's policy toward the conflict. The decision to allow the use of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) follows reports of North Korean troops being deployed to assist Russian forces in the Kursk region. Supporters of the move argue it provides Ukraine with a necessary deterrent against Russian air strikes on civilian infrastructure and levels the tactical playing field. However, critics and some international officials have expressed concern that the decision could escalate tensions between NATO and Moscow. The Kremlin has responded by accusing the U.S. of direct involvement in the war, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that such capabilities are essential to his country's strategic defense. Diplomatic observers suggest the move may also be intended to strengthen Ukraine's position ahead of potential future negotiations.
